There's No Such Thing As White (healthy) Hair
Let’s talk about ‘white blonde' or 'platinum blonde' hair as we are a blonde specialist salon, we have many clients who are looking to go 'pure blonde' or 'white blonde.
Here are the most important things to know about 'white blonde' hair:
Hair at its lightest stage is still going to be pale yellow (unless it’s naturally grey hair).
If your hair has been lightened to a point of decolourisation, aka where it is white without a toner, the hair is going to be EXTREMELY COMPROMISED - which means that the natural structure of the hair will be weakened.
Melanin is the dark pigment that gives your hair its colour. When you lighten your hair, the strong alkaline pH of hair lighteners not only attacks your Melanin at the hair follicles, but also the keratin, which is the key protein to your hairs structure.
This means that if the melanin is broken down to white, the keratin bonds are also broken down in the process, which will result it broken hair.
So, it is important to know that when you see beautiful, healthy ‘white blonde' hair, it is actually pale yellow hair with a toner.
And the toner will fade! And then it is back to pale yellow.
‘White hair’ is very difficult to achieve, especially as our priority is to keep your hair in optimal condition.
We always use Olaplex to keep your hair bonds are strong and intact during each session so your hair stays strong.
And a good colourist will only lighten your hair to the level it can tolerate. It's so important to respect the journey because the fact is is that if your hair is lightened beyond what it can handle, it will simply snap off as those keratin bonds get broken.
It's also important to know that creating a platimum blonde (slowly) by lifting your hair to pale yellow and then toning, is extremely high maintenance and requires regular upkeep.
An easy rule of thumb to consider when going blonder - the further away from your natural colour = the more maintenance (both in salon and at home) is needed to keep it looking its best.
We recommend with all our blonde clients that they invest in the range of Olaplex Home Care to continue to re-build and re-bond the hair in-between colour services. Not only will it keep your hair strong, shiny and minamize any breakage; because it is sulphate free and paraben free it will also help to keep your toner lasting longer and stop your hair from going brassy.
Another at home care must have is a great toning shampoo and conditioner. The secret here is to invest in one that won't overload your hair with purple or blue pigmanets which actually make the blonde go dull, murky and lifeless. Cheap 'purple' shampoos aggressively stain the hair, and some can even have lightening (bleaching) products in them that damage the hair each time you use them! (yes we are looking at you FUDGE, MUVO and FANOLA!)
If you are going to invest in going and staying a very light blonde, its also important to get a premium toning shampoo and conditioner that will provide the right amount of pigment to keep your blonde creamy and bright, plus have high quality moisturising ingredients that will feed you lightened hair to keep it happy and hydrated.
Here's our absolute favourite! It's like taking your hair to the spa!
