WHAT IS BALAYAGE?

Balayage is a French word that means to sweep. It is a hair colour technique that allows for a sunkissed very natural look. Its ultimate goal is to create the gold reflects that the sun gives naturally to the hair in summer. More natural than a full head of colour, Balayage is the ideal choice when you want something subtle, boost the natural reflects, and give a new dimension to your hair. Balayage gives a gorgeous healthy looking  finish that looks glossy and expensive, which can be worn subtle or bold, whatever you want; it’s all about the application.

This timeless technique is the most popular hair colour requested in salons today. Its popularity comes from the fact that it is extremely low maintenance. You can look fashionable and feel good without having to run to the salon every few weeks. It is also seen everywhere, year after year, on the catwalk and red carpet.

We  love balayage as it enables us to place colour more visually. Placing colour visually means that each and every client can receive a bespoke colour completely tailor made for them. It’s great for giving a multitonal effect whilst still looking natural, high shine and low maintenance .

IS BALAYAGE RIGHT FOR ME?

If you never had your hair coloured before or you are afraid of a drastic change, balayage is most definitely the best colour technique for you. If you are blonde, brown, or red, have coloured or non- coloured hair, it doesn’t matter, the balayage technique can be tailored to everyone. The choice is really between you and your colourist. Balayage works for all lengths except for very short cropped hair.

A balayage is also great for colouring greys because the hairdresser will cover the few grey strands rather than colour the whole head.

IS BALAYAGE A COLOUR OR A TECHNIQUE?

Balayage is a colour technique best done in salon. It is very subtle and natural. A professional hairdresser will be able to bespoke this technique to your hair colour, lengths and textured. They will use the perfect amount of colour to reflect your needs.

HOW DOES MY HAIRDRESSER DO A BALAYAGE?

It is what we call a freehand technique where the colour is applied by hand rather than using professional tools such as traditional foiling, meche or cap highlighting. It refers to the process of sweeping colour through the hair using a paddle.

A good balayage expert will be able to place the colour to suit your skin tone so it lights up your features.

To create an amazing bespoked balayage your hairdresser will use our balayage kit together with our complete portfolio of shades across our colour brand COLOUR.ME by Kevin Murphy

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT THAN HIGHLIGHTS?

Balayage is a modern, skilled technique that gives the hairdresser more freedom to place colour where it will fit the best, unlike foils. Foils or highlights will give a uniform finish with more defined strands than a balayage. A balayage will grow out beautifully and very naturally so you don’t get a clear regrowth line.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY BALAYAGE?

Like all hair colour you want to protect it: use a colour radiance protecting shampoo and conditioner, as well as regular treatments and heat protection products when styling. If you take good care of your colour, it will always look its best. The Kevin Murphy Angel range helps protect the colour radiance of your hair, leaving your Balayage looking shiny and fresh.

HOW CAN I STYLE MY BALAYAGE?

Balayage is very well suited to lose curls, beachy or tousled looks. This will allow people to see the many colour variations that the technique brings to the hair. To achieve such a look you can use our professional styling products from our Kevin Murphy range. We love HAIR.RESORT Spray - which guarantees the texture of a 'day at the beach.'
